The 996 sq km large Ruwenzori National Park protects the central region of the mountains of the same name, at the border to The Democratic Repuplic of Kongo. They were created by the collapse of the eastern african continental rift. The highest summit, the Margherita Peak of Mount Stanley, represents with a height of 5,109 m the 3rd highest summit in Africa. It offers the rare sight of snow and ice at the tropical equator. Because of the altitude you find very different vegetation zones: Mountain- and bamboo forests, haulm-like tree plants and alpine flora.

On top of the unique flora, you are invited by interesting routes for hikers and climbers through the foggy Ruwenzori Mountains. A 5 day trip starts at the bottom up the summit in over 5,000 m.

Here again, the foundation of the park originated from the idea of protecting the groundwater. The best time for hiking is mid August to mid December. Outside these times it is very, very rainy.

It is 380 km away from Kampala via Mbarara on tarmaced roads. It is also easy to reach from Kasese, Ibanda and Fort Portal. There is a small airstrip for chartered planes in Kasese.

For people who want to tackle the 5 day trip there are cabins for self-catering at their disposal. For longer visits you are invited to stay in a few hotels in Kasese.
