The Kibale National Park evolved from a former forest reserve and received National Park status in 1993. It is spread over 766 sq km at an altitude oranging from 1,000 m and 1,600 m.

Allthough it is closely located to the Queen Elisabeth National Park, it has its particularities. Almost 80% of its area is covered by indigenous evergreen wet-forests and deciduous forests. Swamps and grassland dominate the rest. Due to the high percentage of forest, chimpanzee trekking has a high success rate.

To reach the park by car is easy. From nearby Fort Portal leads a track into the Park. A visit is possible through out the year, but during the rainy season between April/May and October/November you have to expect some chilly nights.

At the tourist centre of Kanyanchu there are wooden huts and camping sites. In the nearby towns of Nkingo and Bigodi are hotels at your disposal, for example the Ndali Lodge.
